Greetings from "Up North", that is northern Wisconsin for those of you who live on the East or West coast. So much news about me since my last serious post. First the bad news. Previously I wrote that Monica and I were leaving Ithaca for Merced, CA. They offered me a fully-funded year of study, after which I would have my Masters Degree. In just enough time for Monica and I to tell everyone that we were leaving, the offer was retracted. UC, Merced is a new school and they don't have everything together yet as it seems, because the Dean of the Liberal Arts college told the person, who offered me the funding, that they could not afford it.
That left us scrambling to just find a job for next year. The good news was that I applied for three jobs and was short listed for an interview for each of them. McDonalds was especially impressed by my fry-alator expertise and...just kidding. I interviewed with a group at University College London, University of Chicago, and Georgia State University in Atlanta. Despite impressing all of them, the first two decided that they would rather pursue me as a grad student next year than have me as a lab assistant/tech. Thus, I accepted the offer to go to Atlanta.
In Atlanta I will be working with Michael Owren, who is interested in comparative psychology (i.e., primates vs. humans) and the acoustical properties of their social communication. He is moving from Ithaca to Atlanta as well, and setting up a primate lab as well as a human listening lab. My job is to set up the human listening lab.
Academics aside, Atlanta is a pretty cool place to be for next year. As soon as I have some more information on our living situation I will let those of you who wish to visit know.
Until next time, a Hedberg quote
My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana and I said no, but I want a regular banana later so yeaaaay.
